Pandanus boninensis Warburg
Pandanus boninensis is an evergreen small tree endemic to the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands. It has many prop aerial roots on the lower part of the stem. The Japanese name "Takonoki" means "octopus tree", because the plants with their prop aerial roots resemble the shape of an octopus. The fruit is a globular aggregate fruit, that looks like a pineapple. The seeds are dispersed by ocean currents as well as by a kind of fruit bat (Pteropus pselaphon Lay), but feeding damage by the introduced black rat (Rattus rattus L.) has become a serious problem in recent years.

Painted Jar with Jaguar Figurine
Kaki site, Peru, Chancay Culture (11th-15th century).
The neck of this jar is decorated with a small feline figurine which probably represents a jaguar.  While the Chancay Culture produced very fine and multicolored textiles, their potteries were very simple and painted predominantly in bichrome, white and grey.  The chamber of this jar is deformed because of very high firing temperature, but this is not rare in Chancay pottery assemblage.  Chancay people did not discard these warped vessels.  Some scholars infer that they liked these pieces. #084

Club
Bagamoyo (Pwani), Tanzania, Wood, Beginning of 19th Century.
An item probably used for the domestication and slaughter of animals.  Its simple form suggests a basic use, but a small protuberance evokes various images.  As this item was used as a daily commodity for many years, its surface is remarkably beautiful.  The form of primitive tools has a value transcending time.

Fungi specimens
The fungi specimens stored in four cabinets are from the collection of Dr. Masayo Kato (1898–1967) who is a well-known entomologist, specialized in research on Hemiptera. He observed many fungal pathogens of cicadas as enemy and asked to identify those fungi to Dr. Yoshio Kobayasi in the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo (NSMT). As a result, four new species were described as pathogen of Cicadidae by Dr. Kobayasi. Additionally, Dr. Kato also collected Basidiomycetous fungi (mushrooms). Those specimens were identified by an investigator, Mr. Rokuya Imazeki, in the NSMT. Although the collection of mushrooms is composed of common species, it is of great importance in evaluating the fauna and flora of that time in Shakujii area. The other fungi specimens are Ganoderma applanatum (Pers.) Karst (Polyporaceae) and Calvatia nipponica Kawam. (Agaricaceae), famous for large-sized fungi.
