Arastinga jandaya
Jandaya Parakeet
This species of Parakeet inhabit forest environment in North-eastern Brazil. This bird is commonly kept as a companion animal, because of their sociable disposition and playful behaviors. This specimen shows the skeleton with primary and secondary wing feathers. These feathers have aerodynamic function and necessarily for the birds’ flight, therefore bonded tightly on fore limb skeleton.

Ground stone adze
A finely polished adze, made of dark green andesite, is attached to a wooden haft in a way the adze’s edge is perpendicular to the haft. Adzes are usually used for wood working by swinging them down on the worked material. The adze in the showcase was collected in New Caledonia in the South Pacific by Shizuo Oda, an archaeologist, in the 1980s and subsequently donated to the University Museum, The University of Tokyo. Southern Pacific cultures are characterized not only by the continued use of stone tools until recently but also by the reproduction of traditional crafts as “souvenirs” for foreigners to meet their curiosities. In this sense, the exhibited adze may not have been actually used and is likely to represent the social practices, in which indigenous cultures are reproduced with different meanings in changing socioeconomic contexts.

Torsion balance
The torsion balance is an equipment used to measure a very small force or mass. It is based on the principle that a thin fiber twists to a certain rotating angle that is proportional to the applied force or mass. The torsion balance was first invented by an English geologist John Michell (1724-1793) and was improved by an English chemist and physicist Henry Cavendish (1731-1810). This instrument was manufactured by Hartman & Braun, Frankfurt and brought back from Germany by the naturalist Tokusuke Gouda (1901-1949) who later became a professor of the Faculty of Science at Tokyo Imperial University.

Ancient pottery from Iran
Late prehistoric (the 3rd millennium BC) to historic pottery collected by the University of Tokyo archaeological mission in northern Iran. Animal motifs were quite common for the ancient Iranian pottery in general. The Late Bronze Age painted jars include pottery depicting wingspread birds. The long spout of the dull brown Iron Age jars
probably imitates a bird’s bill. The uniquely shaped standing jar with a short spout and two handles is a pottery dated from the historic period. One may note a faint painting of a goat on the body.
