Tetraodon alboreticulatus Tanaka
Tetraodontiform, tetraodontidae,
Tetraodon alboreticulatus Tanaka.
Unlike other typical fishes with the streamlined body plan, the pufferfishes are globose without pelvic fins. They have tough skin fortified with scales modified into strong spines. Their mouth is small and the bones of the jaw are fused into a sort of "beak" with visible sutures which divide the beaks into "teeth". The pufferfishes have a powerful neurotoxin in general, termed tetrodotoxin, concentrated in their liver, muscle, skin etc. To intimidate enemy, they can inflate the body to greatly increase its normal volume by sucking water into a diverticulum at the ventral side of the stomach. Using this characteristic of their body, this pufferfish lantern “Fugu chou-chin” was manufactured using its dried skin.  (No specimen number)

(UMUT-P110109-1)
Smilodon californicus
A pair of extremely long and acute teeth are the most prominent characteristics of saber-toothed cats. The maxillary canine teeth are greatly enlarged and protruded from their mouth. The teeth are believed to be used in hunting large-sized animals like mammoths. They flourished from the Eocene to the Pleistocene, but went extinct as their preys declined during glacial period. The excessively specialized teeth hindered their adaptation to changes in climate and ecosystem.
California, Pliocene (UMUT-P110109-1)

Mineralogical microscope
The microscope owned by kinnosuke Miura (1864-1950), a professor of Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University. It is thought that Miura obtained the microscope, manufactured by Dumaige at Paris, when he had studied neurology under Jean-Martin Charcot in Paris. A mineralogical microscope is a kind of polarizing microscope that utilizes polarized light to investigate optical properties of rocks and minerals. A set of polarized objective lenses and rock sections are included in a wooden case. It is not known exactly why he had the mineralogical microscope.(No specimen number)

(Gallinago hardwickii)
Japanese Birds, stuffed specimen
Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)、Japanese Sparrowhawk (Accipiter gularis)、Collared Scops Owl (Otus lempiji)、Greater Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle lugubris)、Smew (Mergus albellus)、Red-billed Leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea)、Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes)、Nuthatch (Sitta europaea)、Blue-and-white Flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana)、Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva)、White’s Thrush (Zoothera dauma)、Latham’s Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii)
Over five hundred species of bird distribute in Japan. A few of them have vivid coloration as tropical birds, but their morphology and plumage patterns show a wide diversity among their cryptic appearance.
