クントゥル・ワシ遺跡コパ期神殿「蛇のレリーフ」

古代アンデスの神殿は、神話的なイメージで彩られていた。アンデス文明形成期の神殿遺跡クントゥル・ワシの石造建築は、大部分がむき出しの石積みをさらしているが、その壁は本来上塗りで覆われており、そこにしばしば宗教的図像が描かれていたのである。壁面から剥落したレリーフや壁画の断片が多数見つかっているが、壁面に貼り付いて原位置のまま出土した唯一の事例が、この「蛇のレリーフ」である。1997年、東京大学古代アンデス調査団の発掘調査により、コパ期（形成期後期：紀元前500〜250年）の神殿の北部にて発見された。
これはジャガーの頭部を持つ超自然的な蛇が振り返っている像であり、また体側からは似通った別の小さな頭が生えている。これらの頭部の表面に赤色・オレンジ色の顔料がわずかに残っており、かつてはレリーフが極彩色に彩られていたことがうかがわれる。
「蛇のレリーフ」のオリジナルは保存のために遺跡の土中に埋め戻されている。展示品は調査時の写真と図面をもとに本館にて作成したレプリカである。

Los templos antiguos de los Andes fueron adornados con imágenes míticas. Hoy en día la mayoría de los edificios de piedra del centro ceremonial formativo Kuntur Wasi exponen sus materiales de construcción, sin embargo estos muros eran enlucidos originalmente y algunos sectores mostraban iconografías religiosas. Varios fragmentos de altorrelieve y pintura mural caídos de las paredes fueron recuperados; el “Altorrelieve de Serpiente” es único ejemplar que mantiene su posición original en la pared. Esta pieza fue descubierta por la Misión Arqueológica de la Universidad de Tokio en 1997 en el sector norte del Templo de la fase Copa (Período Formativo Tardío: 500 a.C. - 200 a.C.).
La imagen corresponde a una serpiente sobrenatural con cabeza de jaguar que mira hacia atrás, además cuenta con otra cabeza más pequeña que sale del cuerpo. Las cabezas evidencian manchas de pintura roja y anaranjada, lo que sugiere que originalmente el altorrelieve fue pintado en varios colores.
Actualmente la pieza original del “Altorrelieve de Serpiente” está conservada in situ cubierta con tierra del sitio. La pieza expuesta es una réplica hecha en MUUT basándose en las fotos y dibujos realizados durante las investigaciones.

“Relief of Serpent” of Copa Phase Temple, Kuntur Wasi

The ancient temples of the Andes were adorned with mythic images. Most of Kuntur Wasi stone edifices which dated to the Andean Formative appear to be bare stonemasonry. However, originally the walls had the final coating and were often ornamented with religious iconographs. Many fragments of relief and wall painting were discovered but not in the original position. The “Relief of Serpent” was the only case that kept the original position when it was found. This piece was discovered by the Archaeological Mission of the University of Tokyo in 1997 in the northern sector of the Copa Phase Temple (Late Formative Period: 500 BC - 250 BC).
This is a figure of a supernatural serpent with a jaguar head which is looking backward, and has another smaller head which is coming out from the body. On the surface of these heads you can detect a few spots of red and orange pigments which suggest that the relief was once painted with a variety of colors.
“The Relief of Serpent” is kept in the original site where it was discovered for the preservation purposes. The exhibited piece is a replica elaborated by UMUT based on the pictures and drawings which was taken and drawn during the investigations.
