「驚異の部屋——写真家上田義彦のマニエリスム博物誌」
国立台湾芸術大学芸術與文化政策管理研究所と国立大学法人東京大学総合研究博物館は、昨年秋に教育研究の発展推進と交流促進を目的とする協定を締結しました。その取り決めを有意なものとするための第一歩として、東京大学モバイル・ミュージアム「驚異の部屋——写真家上田義彦のマニエリスム博物誌」を両機関の共催事業として、ここに開催する運びとなりました。
東京大学総合研究博物館は、学内に蓄積されている六百万点超の学術標本に「東京大学コレクション」の総称を与え、それらを広く社会に還元、紹介すべく、各年2回の特別展を行っております。特別展示「驚異の部屋——写真家上田義彦のマニエリスム博物誌」は、2006年11月から翌年初めまで開催された、「東京大学コレクション」シリーズの第22回目にあたるものです。
総合研究博物館では、学術標本（＝モノ）を中心に展示を行ってきましたから、写真の展覧会はそれが初めてのことでした。学術標本の撮影を引き受けて下さったのは、日本の現代広告写真界の第一人者、上田義彦さんです。古びた学術標本の存在意義を説き明かそう。そのように考えたら、長大な言説が必要となるに違いありません。写真家である上田さんは、古いモノの価値と魅力、自然のフォルムの神秘と驚異、生き物の尊さと儚さといったものを、精緻なフォトイメージで表現します。それらは直裁であり、明瞭であり、機知にとみ、ときにユーモラスでさえあります。
学術研究の現場では、写真が記録媒体として、長く重用されてきました。そのため、東京大学には無数の記録写真が各所に残されています。それらは、被写体がヒトであれ、動物であれ、自然であれ、つねに主観性を排除した、メカニックな眼差しに特徴があります。これに対し、上田さんのカメラ眼には、類稀な個性のフィルターがかかっています。そのため、捉えられたヴィジョンは、独特の奥行きと柔らかさに包まれ、作家性を強く主張しています。東京大学の由緒正しい学術標本を真正面から見据えたこの偏愛的博物誌は、「フォトアート＆サイエンス」の協働作業の成果として、世界的に見て例のないものと言うことができます。
最後になりましたが、貴重な時間を割いて撮影に当たって下さった上田義彦さん、さらには本展開催にあたりご尽力頂いた国立台湾芸術大学校長の黄光男博士をはじめとする関係各位に対し、記して感謝申し上げる次第です。

Last fall, the National Taiwan University of Arts’ Graduate School of Art-Culture Policy & Management and the University Museum, the University of Tokyo (National University Corporation) have concluded an agreement aiming at promoting the development of education and research as well as encouraging mutual exchange. As a first step toward making this engagement meaningful, we are presenting the University of Tokyo Mobilemuseum exhibition “Chamber of Curiosities: Manneristic Natural History photographed by Yoshihiko Ueda”, held under the auspices of both institutions.
The University Museum, the University of Tokyo, has collectively designated the six million academic specimens stored at the university campus, as "the Collection of The University of Tokyo", and has been organizing a series of special exhibitions twice a year in order to present and thereby return these specimens to society. The special exhibition “Chamber of Curiosities: Manneristic Natural History photographed by Yoshihiko Ueda”, which ran from November 2006 to the following year, was the 22nd exhibition of “the Collection of the University of Tokyo” series.
Since the museum has only exhibited academic specimens (= objects), this was our first attempt to organize a photography exhibition. Mr. Yoshihiko Ueda, one of the best talents in the field of contemporary advertising photography in Japan, kindly agreed to photograph the academic specimens. In order to fully account in writing for the significance of archaic academic specimens, an endless explanation would be necessary. However, through his exquisite photographs, Mr. Ueda captures such things as the value and charm of age-old materials, the mystery and marvel of natural forms, and the preciousness and transience of living beings. The photographs are straightforward, clear, witty, and even humorous at times.
Photography has been utilized as an important tool for keeping records in academic research, and a huge amount of photographs are stored at the University of Tokyo. Whatever their subject might be, be it human figures or animals or nature, photographic records have a characteristic of presenting a mechanic view that eliminates any subjectivity. In contrast, Mr. Ueda's lens catches its objects through the filter of his unique individuality. Therefore, the vision caught by his camera is filled with special depth and softness, emphasizing his aesthetics as an artist. As a fruit of the cooperation between Photographic Art & Science, this record of natural history that squarely captures the academic specimens steeped in the history of the University of Tokyo deserves to be recognized as a truly unique endeavor in the world.
Finally, our words of deep gratitude go to Mr. Yoshihiko Ueda who kindly spared his precious time to take the photographs, as well as to Dr. Kuang-Nan Huang, President of the National Taiwan University of Arts, and all our partners, for their indispensable efforts in the organization of this exhibition.
