東京大学創立130周年記念特別展示
「鳥のビオソフィア――山階コレクションへの誘い」展 開催趣旨
東京大学総合研究博物館では、1996年の改組拡充以来、学術標本の意義と魅力を広く伝えるため、「コレクション」に焦点をあてた展覧会を年ごとに開催してまいりました。そうした取り組みの甲斐もあり、「東京大学コレクション」という呼び名は、いまや学内外で定着をみるに至っております。
今般、東京大学の創立130周年を記念して開催される本特別展示は、本館が財団法人山階鳥類研究所と共同で進めてきた研究セミナー「生き物の文化誌」の活動成果の一端を、同研究所に保存蓄積されている貴重な鳥類学コレクションと併せ、初めて社会に向けて広く公開しようとするものです。
財団法人山階鳥類研究所は、鳥類学者山階芳麿博士(1900-1989)の学術遺産を基に、1942年に創設された鳥類研究機関で、鳥に関する資料・情報の一大宝庫として知られています。その前身は、山階博士が1932年に私費を投じて渋谷南平台私邸内に建てた山階家鳥類標本館で、戦災を免れたコレクションをそのまま継承するかたちで、千葉県我孫子市に現在の研究施設が建てられました。100点あまりの模式標本（タイプ標本）を含む、東アジア・太平洋地域他産鳥類の剥製・骨格・巣・卵、液浸等の標本69,000点、国内外の鳥類関連文献39,000点など、研究所に蓄積された鳥類学コレクションの収蔵量は、文字通り、国内随一、世界的に見ても稀有の水準に達しています。
本特別展示の眼目は下記の通りです。
――これまで纏まって公開される機会に恵まれなかった「山階コレクション」を、初めて本格的に紹介する機会となります。展示物のなかには、昭和天皇ゆかりの鳥類剥製標本群をはじめ、絶滅鳥のドードーやモアの遺物、絶滅危惧種ないし稀少種とされる鳥類の剥製標本、卵殻標本、液浸標本、さらには標本保存用の大型什器類、稀覯書として知られる大型鳥類図譜などが含まれ、他機関からの借用品を含めると、約290品目、総数にして400点を優に超える、かつてない大規模な展示となります。
――鳥類標本は「自然史」を代表する学術資料です。しかし、長い時間をかけて少しずつ蓄積されてきたそれらのコレクションは、ただ単なる自然遺産でなく、いまや立派な歴史的文化財でもあります。また、職人の確かな手業によって作製された古い標本群は、「アート＆サイエンス」の協働の結晶体であり、それらの審美的な側面が、デザイン資源としても新たな関心を惹起し始めています。本特別展示では、とくに鳥類標本の文化誌的な特質、形態的な側面に焦点を当てます。
――鳥類に代表される自然史標本は、自然界・生命体の有する「ビオソフィア」（生態知・生命知）を解明するの学術（研究）資源であると同時に、人と自然の持続的な共生社会を実現するために不可欠な産業（遺伝）資源でもあります。特別天然記念物に指定されている尾長4.7メートルのオナガドリをはじめ、ヤケイ・ニワトリなど54点の展示される本特別展示は、「家禽化」の一語で括られる、人と鳥類の相互依存的な関わりについて、語源、歴史、文化、民俗、生態、育種、保全など多角的に考える契機となります。
――展示デザインに関するミュージアム・テクノロジー（博物館工学）の研究成果も併せて公開します。自然誌と文化誌、学術標本とアートワークの新しい融合展示、モバイル・ミュージアムとしての展開が可能な実験的展示モジュール、レプリカの活用法、さらには空間構成、ライティング、グラフィックなど、ミュージアム展示における各種の先端的な試みを集大成します。

Special exhibition celebrating the 130th anniversary of the University of Tokyo
"The Biosophia of Birds: an invitation to the Yamashina Collection"
Dear Sirs:
Since its reorganization in 1996, the University Museum, the University of Tokyo has held many exhibitions putting "collections" as their main subject, in order to convey wide and afar the significance and fascination of academic specimens. It would not be an overstatement to say that the name of "The Collection of the University of Tokyo" has established itself inside and outside the University, as an appellation for the framework that relates to the series of such exhibitions.
The present special exhibition is an attempt to introduce, together with the ornithic collection conserved and accumulated at the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, some of the findings for the first time to the society from the collaborative research project "Biosophia Atudies" between the Institute and the University Museum.
The Yamashina Institute for Ornithology was founded in 1942, based on the scientific heritage of ornithologist Dr. Yoshimaro Yamashina, and is known as a treasury of materials and information on birds. It dates from a private museum built within the residence of Dr. Yamashina in Nanpeidai, Shibuya, and part of the collection that escaped war damage was inherited in its entirety to the present research facility built in location of Abiko, Chiba. The prides itself on its preeminent storage of 69,000 specimens of East Asian and Pacific birds including more than 100 type specimens, stuffed specimens, skeletons, nests, eggs and those preserved in liquid, and 39,000 documents on birds from home and abroad.
The main purpose of the special exhibition is as follows:
-Introducing the whole picture of the Yamashina Collection for the first time, which until now enjoyed little opportunity to be exhibited properly. The exhibits include stuffed ornithic specimens collection associated with Showa Emperor, remains of the extinct birds such as Aepyornis(Elephant Bird), stuffed specimens of endangered and scarce species, and relevant ornithic documents classified as art, graphics and ritual utensils.
-While ornithic specimens are representative specimens of "natural history", their collection that has been accumulated through such a long period of time is now an important historic and cultural heritage. They are now generating new interests in the aesthetic aspect of these old specimens. This exhibition features the characteristic of ornithic specimens as cultural history and their aesthetic aspect in particular. Public can enjoy not only the charm of natural historic specimens but the wonders of specimen world encompassing both natural and cultural history.
-Natural historic specimens represented by ornithic specimens are vital scientific sources for realizing the continuous coexistence of humans and nature. We appeal to the society the scientific and cultural significance of natural historic specimens that actually exist as objects.
-We display the results of the studies of museum technology on exhibition designs. We try to acquaint you with a whole range of new and innovative trials in a new methodology of fusing together natural history and cultural history, experimental exhibition modules expandable as a mobile museum, use of replicas, spatial composition, lighting, graphics, and so on.
