現代広告写真界の第一人者である上田義彦さんに、東京大学総合研究博物館の学術標本の撮影をしていただきました。写真家である上田さんは、古いモノの価値と魅力、自然のフォルムの神秘と驚異、生き物の尊さと儚さといったものを、精緻なフォトイメージで表現します。それらは直截であり、明瞭であり、機知にとみ、ときにユーモラスでさえあります。捉えられたヴィジョンは、独特の奥行きと柔らかさに包まれ、作家性を強く主張しています。東京大学の由緒正しい学術標本を真正面から見据えたこの偏愛的博物誌は、「フォトアート＆サイエンス」の協働作業の成果として、世界的に見て例のないものと言えます。

「東京大学コレクション――写真家上田義彦のマニエリスム博物誌」
東京大学総合研究博物館は、学内に蓄積されている膨大な学術標本に「東京大学コレクション」の総称を与え、それらを広く社会に還元、紹介すべく、各年平均2回の特別展を行って参りました。今般、、通算21回を数える「東京大学コレクション」展示企画そのものを改めて振り返り、次期の新たな一歩を踏み出す契機にしたいと考えました。
本館ではこれまで学術標本（＝モノ）を展示してきましたので、写真の展覧会は初めてのことになります。学術標本の撮影を引き受けて下さったのは、現代広告写真界の第一人者、上田義彦さんです。古びた学術標本の存在意義を説き明かそう。そのように考えたら、長大な言説が必要となるに違いありません。写真家である上田さんは、古いモノの価値と魅力、自然のフォルムの神秘と驚異、生き物の尊さと儚さといったものを、精緻なフォトイメージで表現します。それらは直截であり、明瞭であり、機知にとみ、ときにユーモラスでさえあります。
学術研究の現場では、写真が記録媒体として長く重用されてきました。そのため、本学には無数の記録写真資料が各所に残されています。記録写真は、被写体がヒトであれ、動物であれ、自然であれ、つねに主観性を排除した、メカニックな眼差しに特徴があります。それに対し、上田さんのカメラ眼には、類稀な個性のフィルターがかかっています。そのため、捉えられたヴィジョンは、独特の奥行きと柔らかさに包まれ、作家性を強く主張しています。東京大学の由緒正しい学術標本を真正面から見据えたこの偏愛的博物誌は、「フォトアート＆サイエンス」の協働作業の成果として、世界的に見て例のないものと言えます。

"Chamber of Curiosities:
Manneristic Natural History photographed by Yoshihiko Ueda"
The University Museum of The University of Tokyo has designated the vast amount of specimens stored at the university campus as "The Collection of The University of Tokyo", and has been organizing a series of special exhibitions on average twice a year in order to introduce and thereby return these specimens to the society. At this point when the special exhibition has numbered 21 in total, we decided to reflect upon the exhibition project of "The Collection of The University of Tokyo" itself and take a fresh step toward our future.
Since the museum has only exhibited academic specimens (=objects), this is our first attempt to organize an exhibition of photographies. Mr. Yoshihiko Ueda, one of the best talents in the field of contemporary advertising photography, kindly agreed to photograph the academic specimens. To explain in writing the significance of archaic academic specimens, sea of words would be necessary. Through his exquisite photographs, Mr. Ueda captures such things as the value and charm of age-old materials, the mystery and marvel of natural forms, and the preciousness and transience of life. They are straightforward, clear, witty, and even humorous at times.
Photography has been utilized as an important tool for keeping records in academic research, and a huge amount of photographies are stored here at The University. Whatever a subject might be, be it human figures or animals or nature, photographic records have a characteristic of presenting a mechanic view that eliminates any subjectivity of the photographer. Mr. Ueda's camera catches the objects through a filter of his unique individuality. Therefore, the vision caught by his camera is filled with special depth and softness, emphasizing the aesthetics of the photographer. As the fruit of the cooperation of "Photo-Art & Science", this record of natural history that squarely captures the academic specimens, steeped in history, of The University of Tokyo deserve to be called something truly unique in the world.
