Department of Archaeology of Western Asia

This department houses archeological materials acquired during the university’s field expeditions with the courtesy the local authorities in Western Asia. Starting from the excavations of Tall i-Bakun in Iran and Telul eth-Thalathat in Iraq in 1956, the university’s archeologists have conducted field campaigns in not only these countries but also Syria, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and others. The largest material was acquired during the first campaign from September 1956 to August 1957. As the first Japanese archeological expedition to Western Asia, the expedition team built up a reference collection for research and knowledge of West Asian archeology by carrying out surface surveys of numerous sites in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, besides taking photographs of the relevant sites and monuments. This department is responsible for providing a rich collection for developing research and education; it preserves field archives, photographic records, and original drawings of sites and objects.
