Department of Archaeology
This department has been closely connected to the Faculty of Letters. The department, collection storage, and Tokoro Research Laboratory of Hokkaido cannot be separated, as all belong to the Faculty of Letters. A substantial portion of its collection is materials from the East Asian mainland and Japan. Acquisition of those from Japan is continuous due to the yearly training excavation course for students of archeology at Tokoro since the 1960s—these materials include stone tools, ceramics, bone and antler tools, food residue, and other items from the Paleolithic, Jomon, Epi-Jomon, Okhotsk, Satsumon and Ainu periods.
