Architecture in the 20th Century

Two architectural models entitled "Architecture in the 20th Century" are exhibited. One consists of 18 institutional buildings at a scale of 1/300, and the other consists of 18 residential buildings at a scale of 1/100. Both are composed as architectural collages and printed by a 3D printer. The buildings are selected to consider the diversity of design ideas and architects in the 20th century. We first attempted such an integrated model in 2017 with "Memories of Architecture." An imaginary urban space is formed based on a new interrelationship by assembling buildings that are usually not adjacent to each other. From these groups of models, we can identify several themes of 20th-century architecture: coexistence with nature, preservation and renovation, growth and intervention, separation of columns and walls, unlimited functions, minimal space, industrialization of construction, metabolism, presence of different times, superimposition of systems, transparency and lightness, and innovation in materials. "Architecture in the 20th Century" has been created as part of research and educational activities at the University Museum of the University of Tokyo. They are currently on display in the museum's special exhibition, "New Developments in Spatial History / UMUT SPATIUM."
